When you have trees around your house, storms can put you on high alert. What will happen to your favorite tree? Is your house safe? How will the limbs hanging over the roof handle the wind, snow and ice?

Pruning is one of the best ways to help your trees stand-up to winter. The difference after pruning is dramatic. Saving An Uprooted Tree

Below are Before and After photos of a "Rose of Sharon" that uprooted in Yardley. Erik Rodgers, Giroud Arborist, inspected the tree and found the root system was still intact with a good root ball making it possible to save it with staking. After staking, the "Rose of Sharon" is once again upright. The tree will need these stakes for a least a year to give the root system time to get re-established. Giroud Crew Leader, Luigi Vargas, snapped both photos and commented that this was one of the nicest "Rose of Sharon's" he had ever seen.

Saving an Ash Tree in Horsham

Bolting helps prevent trees from splitting apart. The early snow storm was especially hard on trees with weak limbs and cracked trunks. The heavy snow was just too much and many trees failed. Rob Poley, Giroud Arborist, shows before and after pictures of an Ash tree with a cracked trunk in Horsham PA. In the before picture, the crack is very wide making the tree at high risk for failure. The after picture shows the two bolts on the sides of the tree and how they firmly close the crack and pull the trunk together. Ever wondered what makes leaves change color in the Fall? The most common answer is colder temperatures. But leaves actually begin to turn before the cooler days of Fall arrive.

So what gives us the beautiful display of fall colors? The answer is a combination of less sunlight, colder temperatures and the production Chlorophyll, a green pigment. Less sunlight and colder temperatures slows chlorophyll production and leaves lose their green color. The result is a real treat. Tomorrow we’re sending out Tree Service Technicians to spray Beech trees with fungicide to combat Bleeding Canker. What’s Bleeding Canker?! It’s a bark disease and a noticeable symptom is reddish ooze coming from small cracks in cankers on trees. If untreated it can cause branch die back and eventually kill the tree.

We’re also going to be treating Hemlocks in the Philadelphia area for Scale and Adelgid, serious pests which can cause significant damage.

The Lawn Care Department will be super busy tomorrow with routine lawn fertilizations as well as the start up of lawn aeration and seeding jobs!

As a violent storm raged outside her home in Horsham, Judy Lightstone worried about her much loved barn. Would the Red Maple towering over the barn’s roof stand up to the storm?

Judy didn't have to worry. Two weeks before the storm hit, she asked Giroud to inspect the trees and take action. “To protect the barn, we installed three through bolt cable systems in the Red Maple.” says Robert Poley, Giroud Arborist. “Additionally, we thinned the canopy to improve air flow.”

When the storm cleared, Judy warily looked out to see the damage. While a Douglas Fir on another part of her property had fallen, Judy was thrilled to see that the Red Maple and her barn came through beautifully.

Giroud Arbor Day Fair at Pennypack Trust Celebrates Trees

With Arbor Day fast approaching, Giroud Tree and Lawn and Pennypack Ecological Restoration Trust joined together for an Arbor Day Fair on April 17th to celebrate and preserve trees.

The Pennypack Preserve came alive with children, parents and other nature seekers ready to have fun and learn about trees in a whole new way. Rope climb and saddle rides, nature themed crafts, and aerial lift rides were were among the popular attractions.

The Fair culminated with Giroud's donation of $1,000 in free tree care to preserve a giant European Beech that posed a safety hazard to visitors and cars. Visitors watched as Mike Teti, Giroud Trainer and Champion Climber, thinned the crown, installed two cables and inserted a bolt to brace the trunk and make the tree safe.

Giroud and Pennypack Trust hope to make the Arbor Day Fair an annual event to raise awareness about the importance of trees in our landscapes and encourage more people to enjoy the Pennypack Preserve, a beautiful resource that is right in our backyard.

Giroud Donates $2,800 to Hatboro Area YMCA To Make Trees Safer

Giroud Tree and Lawn has awarded a grant of $2,800 to the Hatboro Area YMCA for its “Strong Kids” program and tree safety.

Giroud's grant targets the Hatboro Y’s most urgent tree care needs. Rob Nagy, Giroud Representative and ISA Certified Arborist, inspected the trees surrounding the Y’s high traffic areas and identified safety issues. The video shows the crew setting up and completing a tree removal with the large crane as well as Gary Chamberlain, Executive Director of the Hatboro Area YMCA, meeting with Rob Nagy after the work was completed to discus the results accomplished including removal of hazardous limbs and trees from the Child Care Center, pool and parking areas.
The grant is part of the "Giroud Treework for Charity" program which provides free tree care to local parks, historical sites and other non-profit organizations who are struggling to preserve their irreplaceable trees and keep their facilities safe.

Trees and shrubs can take a real beating from snowplows, deicers and storms. Giroud recommends the following steps to protect your trees:

Prevent snowplow damage: Meet with your snowplow service about where to pile the snow. Mark the location of your ornamental plantings with tall stakes tied with bright ribbon to keep the plows away.

Beware of Deicers: Read the label on your Deicer. Many Deicers can damage or kill shrubs and trees. Use a Deicer that is friendly to your plants and soil such as Calcium Chloride or CMA.

Shake ice and snow off shrubs and small trees: Use a long pole or rake to gently lift branches and dislodge snow or ice. The heavy weight can break or split trees and shrubs.

Giroud Successfully Treats Oaks at Jeanes Hospital for Bacterial Leaf Scorch

Drive down any street with Oak trees or just look in your own back yard. Many Oaks are infected with Bacterial Leaf Scorch (BLS), a serious, often fatal disease. “There is no cure for BLS,” says Drew Slousky, Giroud Vice President. “However, treatment with Oxytetracycline, an antibiotic, can dramatically improve a tree’s chances of survival.”

The proof is in the results. Giroud has been treating the Oaks at Jeanes Hospital for BLS for several years. The Oaks at Jeanes now display full crowns of lush green leaves. Just across the street, untreated oaks show BLS decline.

Soil test if you haven't done it in the last three years.
Before reseeding, dethatch, mow low and remove dead material and clippings
Choose the right grasses for the site, topdress and if site is compacted, use a core aerator
Optimum seeding dates are now through mid-October.

Called the Improved Bradford Pear and selected “Urban Tree of the Year” by City Tree Magazine, the 'Chanticleer' Pear is less prone to the problems associated with the Bradford such as branch breakage with heavy winter snow and fireblight.

The Chanticleer has year-round appeal. In the spring, the Pear displays clusters of 1-inch, white flowers. followed by pea-sized, inedible fruits. By fall, the leaves turn shiny dark red to scarlet.

With an upright-pyramidal tree that is much narrower than other ornamental pears, the Chanticleer is an especially good choice for sunny locations where lateral space to spread out is limited. At maturity, this Pear reaches heights ranging from 30 to 50 feet. Very adaptable to many different soils, it tolerates drought, heat, cold, and pollution.

Tree Spotlight: Crataegus Viridis ("Winter King" Green Hawthorne)

Aptly named “Winter King,” this variety of Crataegus Viridis, (Green Hawthorne) is crowned with a regal display of red berries in winter. For added interest, the Hawthorne's beige bark peels and flakes to reveal a coppery cinnamon beneath. The show continues in the Spring and Summer when clusters of white flowers are set against glossy green leaves. For a grand finale, its leaves turn gold with traces of red and purple in Autumn.

Unlike most Hawthornes, the "Winter King" is relatively pest and disease free. It also tolerates a variety of soil types as well as urban pollution. A large tree, the Hawthorne can reach 25-35 feet in height and width.

The Hawthorne is best as a focal point tree and doesn't usually need a backdrop. If one is necessary, light colors are superior or else the foliage becomes lost in the background. If only planted for winter interest, plant it in front of dark evergreens such as yews or hemlocks.

Here are the most important steps to to ensure your tree is beautiful in your home and yard.

Select a healthy tree wrapped in burlap that thrives in our region such as: Concolor Fir, White Spruce, Douglas Fir or Colorado Blue Spruce.
Dig the hole now since the ground might be frozen after the Holidays. Be sure you don’t make the hole too deep! When planted, the top of the root ball should be one or two inches above ground level. Cover the hole with hay or mulch. Put the loose soil in a wheelbarrow or trash can and leave it in the garage. You'll need loose soil to back fill the hole.
Store the tree in a cool, enclosed location. Keep the root ball moist, not wet, and well-mulched to prevent freezing. Spray the tree with an antidessicant or antiwilt product to minimize needle and moisture loss.
No earlier than 5-7 days before Christmas, bring in the tree and place it in the coolest part of the room—away from heating ducts. Don't spray it with fake snow; use cool-temp lights and lightweight decorations.
Water your tree to keep the roots moist. Then wait to water again until the water is almost gone.
Leave inside no longer than 7-10 days. Do not move he tree directly from a warm house to freezing temperatures. Instead, move it to a sheltered area first for four days to allow it to adjust to colder temperatures.
Before planting, remove plastic string or wrap from the root ball or trunk of the tree. Wire or burlap may be left around the roots.
Place the tree in the hole and tightly pack soil around the root ball. Spread two inches of mulch around the the base of the tree.
Do not fertilize the tree now. Wait until spring. If you have compost available, mix it into the loose soil while planting.
Stake the tree to prevent wind tipping or damage during the first growing season.

With copper-brown bark peels into thin, shimmering strips, the Acer Griseum (Paper Bark Maple) is stunning in the winter, especially if contrasted with a snowy or solid green background on sunny days. Do It Yourself: Raking Leaves and Composting

It’s more than aesthetics, raking leaves is important for your lawn. Leaves left on your grass over the winter will smother your lawn. Come Spring, you’ll find bare spots that will open the door for crabgrass and weeds.

Take special care when removing leaves from recently seeded lawns. Use a blower to protect tender seedlings. If you don’t have a blower, please use a light touch to gently remove leaves from newly seeded areas.

If you are industrious and interested in composting the leaves you rake up, be prepared for a time consuming but very worthwhile process. You'll need a composting bin in which you regularly mix or "turn over" the pile of leaves. You can make your own bin using discarded pallets that will allow air flow. Leaves in the homemade version will need to be turned with a pitchfork. You can also buy a compost tumbler with a hand crank to frequently turn the leaves. Tree Spotlight: Franklinia

Discovered by the Bartram's in 1765, the Franklinia was named in honor of their friend, Benjamin Frankilin. A multi-stemmed tree with year-round interest, its creamy white fragrant flowers bloom from late July into September. The dark green leaves turn orange and red in the fall, often in combination with a few late flowers. Subtly striped branches and persistent seed capsules add winter interest. Sometimes this plant will try to grow as a shrub, but it can usually be trained into tree form.

Bartram's Garden recommends the following tips for planting and caring for your Franklinia:

Proper site selection and pre-planting preparation are crucial.
Plant a Franklinia in a site with excellent drainage, acidic soil enriched with organic matter with a pH between 5-6, and protection from strong winds.
The Franklinia tolerates full sun as well as dense shade, but fares best in partial shade (about a half day of sunlight).
Apply mulch lightly over entire root area and make sure it has adequate water in the summer, and through the fall when it still growing and flowering.

Handsome shape, rich, dark green color and unusual needle formation make the Umbrella Pine (Sciadopitys verticillata) a stand-out specimen tree. A slow grower at about 6 inches per year, it can achieve height of 25-30 feet tall in the urban landscape. The Umbrella Pine should be planted in moist, slightly acidic soil in a sunny location with good protection from the wind.

The bark of the umbrella pine is brown or grayish-brown, and peels off in long strips. The tree has two types of leaves. Small, triangular, scalelike leaves are scattered along the stems. At the ends of stems, radiating like the ribs of an umbrella, are narrow, glossy, dark green needles. Male cones form in dense clusters while the female cones grow individually at the tips of branches. Over a period of two years, the cones mature and change from green to brown.

An interesting thing recently happened at a customer's property. We were walking around checking out a few items in the rain. The ground was wet and puddles were everywhere, As everyone knows, it's been raining for what seems like months so there is no shortage of water on properties, streams, ponds etc.

I was inspecting some cables in a large multi-leadered Silver Maple, when I noticed something out of the ordinary. To the customer's and my surprise, I noticed a female duck nesting 5 feet off the ground in the crotch of the tree. She was laying on approximately a dozen eggs. Winning the War Against Weeds!

Weeds, including crabgrass (pictured right) and nutsedge, are actively growing in lawns and garden beds.

The best defense against weeds in your lawn is a healthy, thick lawn that leaves little room for weeds to grow. If weed control is necessary, use Sedgehammer or Drive herbicides. Always follow the label and use caution when applying herbicides. If your herbicides contains dicamba, do not use it near trees or shrubs. Never use Round-Up in lawns unless you're doing a complete reseeding.

Weeds in beds may be treated with a non-selective herbicide such as Round-Up. The herbicide will break down into harmless components in the soil . Take care not to let this product come in contact desirable plants.

Rainy Spring Perfect for Fungus

Tree and lawn alert! The past two months of rain and cool temperatures have created the perfect breeding grounds for fungus.

I recently took down a tree at my Hatboro home. I didn't do it alone however, I enlisted the help of two friends I met on the job as an Arborist Representative for Giroud Tree and Lawn Care.

The large Wild Cherry was not only in the location I desired for my future shed, it was in poor condition and had been dropping branches.

In four hours, we had everything on the ground. My friends' work was over but I'd be busy for the next month cutting and stacking the fresh supply of fire wood. One question we all had, but couldn't answer was why the bottom 6 feet of trunk had a vertical split and the center of the trunk had a large core of rotten wood!

Tonight, as I finished splitting the last section of a 3 ft diameter log, I saw the answer. A rusty piece of wire was buried deep inside the trunk. It had probably been tied around the tree when the house was first built. When the tree was just a 10 inch diameter sapling in the late 50's.
